SO! The latest issue of Game Informer has an article about Portal 2(!!!) which is coming out this Xmas. In the article it talked about a patch that was released without any announcement that retconned the ending to Portal, making it so that the two games are linked (basically, as Chell lies there in the parking lot at the end, someone thanks her for assuming the Party Submission Position and drags her off for further testing--they give this information in the article so that's why I'm not spoiler cutting it). The article made me want to replay Portal, so I loaded it into my 360 and, though it told me it was downloading new content for the game, when I got to the ending, it was the same as it always was.

So I'm wondering, was the patch only for the PC version? Has anyone else come across this or discovered the ending different on their 360 version?

Outside of that, who else is ridiculously excited about Portal 2??

Game Informer site with web supplements for the article if anyone is interested.

Heavy Rain: The Taxidermist DLC

  • Mar. 17th, 2010 at 2:12 PM
Has anyone tried to purchase/download this piece of content on PSN? I'm a relatively new PS3 owner (having owned a 360 and a Wii for ages) and I cannot work out if I'm doing something wrong or PSN is borked. I'm in the game's main menu and when I select the DLC it brings me to the Playstation Store... But it's empty. There's no content there for me to select. I've exited the game and tried searching for it by going directly into the Store, but I just can't bloody find it anywhere.

Google isn't helping, aside from suggesting that I don't download it pre March 4th.

Any ideas folks?

I now have an iPhone, yes? Okay, so I've decided to start trying to use my twitter account because, well, "there's an app for that!" Plus, I seem to change my Facebook status like 6965468946351 times a day. Might as well tweet some of the shorter ones and forget about it. *shrugs*

Final Fantasy XIII Distress.

  • Mar. 17th, 2010 at 11:06 AM
Hello all lady and man gamers,

I am about 3 days away form receiving my copy of Final Fantasy XIII so in my excitement I have been reading a lot of reviews and hearing a lot of people's opinions about the game.

This, however, has gotten me a bit panicky. A lot of Japanese reviewers have given the game outstanding scores, whereas a lot of Western reviewers have given it one of the lower scores I've seen given to a Final Fantasy game. I've heard the game is starkingly linear, and that you can't explore towns and fields anymore like in the past games. Apparently it's even worse in terms of linearity than FFX was, not that I minded it though. Additionally, I've heard that there are little to none side quests or things like that... And this has, of course, made me worry about how long the game is going to be because I love long Final Fantasies...

I just need opinions from those of you who have played the game. No spoilers though please :) What's your take on it?

Astro Ranch

  • Mar. 16th, 2010 at 10:21 PM
With mod permission, I am now going to shamelessly promote our game that just came out for iPhone/iPod touch. It's called 'Astro Ranch' and it's a space farming sim with gameplay reminiscent of (but not exactly the same as) Animal Crossing and Harvest Moon.

I was an artist on this, I did all the concept art/character design, as well as animation, GUI stuff... it was a team of basically four. Two coders and two artists! We're really proud of it, but also pretty dedicated to keeping it updated and tweaking any problems it has -- there's a forum/AstroRanch.com for adding friends, trading items, and reporting issues/getting help if you need it.

--->App Store Link!<---

Here's a couple of reviews if you're not sure.

Screenshots/videos! )

Anyway, if this is your type of game and you play on your phone, check us out!

Codehunters vs Borderlands

  • Mar. 16th, 2010 at 9:30 PM
I just came across a wonderful short film called Codehunters and immediately noticed the similarities between the short and Borderlands. A quick Google search tells me that the folks at Gearbox recently admitted to being "inspired" by Codehunters.

What do you ladies think? Was there a little bit of inspiration or something a little more going on?

God of War III

  • Mar. 16th, 2010 at 12:07 PM
Impressed?

Without giving too much away of course..

How are you all like the story? The gameplay? The graphics?

Everything you were hoping for? Or did somethings not meet your expectations?

Close to finishing the game? Nowhere near the end? Upset that you have to go to school or work because all you want to do is play the game?

Just interested.

And once again, without giving too many things away, especially the ending if you've gotten there.

If you wish to talk about the ending, just say if you've liked it or not, not why.

Breeding Games

  • Mar. 16th, 2010 at 9:35 AM
Okay, so I'm looking for reccomendations for a rather specific type of game.

I've been playing PonyIsland for a while, and while I like the "genetics" that go into it, the forced waiting due to things being done in real time rather irks me. Basically, it's a browser game where you breed magical ponies, and these ponies can have different genes to change how some aspects of their appearance come through. The genes have some dominance and recessiveness playing into them, and dominance is a scale for any slot that has an associated gene. It takes something like 5-7 real days (can't recall) for a pregnant mare to give birth, and it takes 20 real days for a baby to grow up. Lots of waiting if you want to get anywhere that takes a few generations.

Does anyone know of a game like this that is played offline? I want some kind of genetics to play a role, but I do not want the "genetics" of, say, Virtual Horse Ranch (when breeding two breeds that the creator has designated as origin breeds for a third breed will result in the foal being of that third breed, in a predetermined pattern), as those irked me a bit. Just the PonyIsland-style "if you breed a paint to a normal non-carrier, you get paint carriers". Ideally, I'd like to see some small degree of random mutations play in as well, but that's hardly a requirement. If the genetics are modelled off of (simplified) real life genetics, that'd be fine as well, though in that case I'd prefer cats as subjects, since those and chinchillas are what I know (and realistically, I know I won't get chinchillas in a game).

I'd also prefer if there was some kind of goal mechanic playing in. E.g. "breed a blue-point mitted longhair cat".

Any ideas? From what I hear, most creature-breeding games out there are seriously lacking in the genetics department, and I'm not too keen on a game that says "okay, here's the mommy and here's the daddy, I'll just make the baby a random mashup of the two".

Windows 7 Upgrade questions

  • Mar. 15th, 2010 at 10:16 PM
I got my copy of the Windows 7 upgrade in the mail today, and plan to use it. I have a few questions, though.

I read that just upgrading won't wipe anything from the hard drive. However, I'm afraid of anything happening to my beloved game saves. I know you can redownload the games as long as you bought them and have them on your STEAM account, but I'm mainly just worried about my Dragon Age save. Will it wipe it? Is there a way I can back the save up?

Has anybody had any problems since upgrading from Vista to 7? I'm not worried about my computer being able to run it or anything. It's equipped to run the games I have and runs them perfectly.

Any tips you can give? I want to know just what I'm getting into before I take the plunge. :P

EDIT: I upgraded last night [I would've done a clean install but I just have too many games on here that would take too long to download again x_x], and tested TF2. So far so good! I'll be testing L4D1/2, Dragon Age, Portal, Far Cry, and some other games as well. Thank you so much, guys! You all are so amazing. :) I'll be happy to update this post again when I finish testing the rest of my games.

Deal-Breakers in Games?

  • Mar. 15th, 2010 at 6:13 PM
I'm bringing this up because I happened to be checking out some reviews for Dragon Age: Origins on Amazon.com and noticed that several reviewers gave the game only one star because of the "poor graphics", even though they admitted that both the story and the gameplay were excellent.

Now, I think a lot of people here would agree that that's a petty and superficial reason to bash a game, but if we can agree that graphics don't necessarily make or break a game, then what does?

Bad voice-acting? Unforgiving quick-time events? Really annoying characters?

(This is probably going to turn into a "games everybody loves that I hate/games everybody hates that I love", isn't it?)

Has there ever been a single flaw in a game your would otherwise consider good game that, in your opinion, qualifies as a total deal-breaker? What makes you throw a game down in disgust and never touch it again?

For me, my ultimate deal-breaker is games where I can't get into the story. If I genuinely don't care about what happens next, no amount of shooty fun and shiny graphics are going to hook me.

I need a bit of help.

  • Mar. 11th, 2010 at 7:57 AM

Well this is my first post to this community so if I end up sounding dumb then please forgive me. So I've got my hands on Final Fantasy XIII and I've run into an issue when it comes to saving my game. It saved just fine up until a few hours in but after that it seems to save just fine until I switch the console off and then come back to it the next day and discover that the save file has either been deleted or just didn't save at all. I end up back at an earlier point in the game. This is the second time this has happened. Has this happened to anyone else?

I've asked my boyfriend and he thinks it's because something is wrong with my hard drive but all my other games save just fine. I've checked the disc for scratches too... Just in case, but all seems well. Any advice?

Sorry if this makes little sense it's just I find it difficult to explain the problem.

Just a quick question:

  • Mar. 15th, 2010 at 10:26 AM
I'm new to the community and this is my first post so if I make myself sound stupid, please be forgiving. I haven't really played any video games since I was in middle school (I recently graduated from college) and my dad bought me a PS1. I got rid of it when the new PS2 came out because they weren't going to make anymore games for the PS1, but I never got another console. I've played off and on at friends houses but very sporadically, so I don't think that counts. I say all that because my birthday is this month and my dad bought me a PS3 120GB as my gift, but I have no real knowledge on consoles and video games other then the few things I played. What I asked for was a PS2 because all the games I want to play are on that console, but my dad was all 'They say to get a PS3. They aren't making games for PS2 anymore. They won't support it anymore.' These were valid points, but it didn't really matter. I wanted a PS2. Well now a PS3 without backwards capability is on the way to my house, and what I want to know is...

is at all possible that Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2 will be re-released for PS3? I already have a pretty good idea that the other games I want won't be re-released on any other console, and I'll have to get a PS2 to play them, but if it's possible that they will re-release KH 1 and 2, then I might now bother with a PS2 right now. So is it possible?

Platform of choice for RPGs

  • Mar. 15th, 2010 at 9:56 AM
Lately the third parties have been releasing some pretty good RPGs for various video game consoles at the same time. The most recent examples would be Final Fantasy XIII and Resonance of Fate. And I seriously don't know for which consoles I should take these games. I'm almost positively sure I'd rather get FF13 for PS3, but in the case of Resonance of Fate, I'm not quite sure yet. Personally, I like the achievements rather than the trophies, but the idea of stop playing to switch disks doesn't really please me...
The question is: for anyone who may have both PS3 and XBox 360, which is your platform of choice for multiplatform games and why? Is there a game you would buy for one console, but not for the other? What kind of games are better played on XBox 360 than on PS3 and vice-versa?

Speaker or Headphone Settings?

  • Mar. 15th, 2010 at 8:53 PM
I'm playing Estopolis/Lufia Remake on the DS now and there's an option to set the music to speakers or headphones.

But this setting doesn't exist for every game. Does that mean other games can automatically detect whether or not headphones are plugged in and automatically adjust? Or are other games permanently set to speaker mode, or headphone mode?

Actually, I'm switching between the two modes now and don't really notice any difference in quality.

~MASTER~

‘Whoah! Wait a minute, did u just say Yatta!?’

Main Characters: Omi Matsunaga, and Adriel Erburu .
Other Characters: Liam, Kim, & Matsuo Tsurayaba
When: Undecided.
Where: Barcelona, Spain
What: Omi’s past finally catches up with him…
Style: Informal narrative
Story/RPG: New York Mutants RPG, now known as Mutantology.
Actual Writing Date: sometime in December 2009
Notes: Once upon a time, Omi my CAT Boy was part of his first ever RPG. It is still up and running, or maybe not, NY Mutants, at Livejournal and now Mutantology at insanejournal. I never thought that CAT Boy would make it into RPG, and even turn into a mutant. This particular narrative is about Omi and Adriel, and catching up with them. It has been years since they've seen New York City, now they both live in Spain and are special ops agents to VIPER, a mysterious mutant who leads one of the most dangerous crime organizations in the World. They are called The Serpent Organization, and like many powerful groups, they have their opposition. In this particular log, their opposition, returns to claim something(one) that belongs to them.
Lesson To Be Learned: Be careful what you do in your past, it might catch up with you.
Warning: Boys hitting on each other, some sexual language, er… all that good stuff that comes when you get characters like Omi and Adriel together in a darn narrative.
Purpose: Just a bit of, what the hell happened to Omi and Adriel after they left the mansion during the short lived, but rather fun stint in it (NYMutants). Where did they go? Did they continue working for the good side? Not that they were ever part of it, anyway.
Opening Theme: “Again and So On” by Kinky
Closing Theme: “Resiste” by Zoe

‘For someone so little, you sure as hell grab too much attention around here, Omi.’ Adriel smiled as he spoke telepathically to his partner in crime, who was sitting quite a few paces, chairs, and tables away from him. It was one of those nights, in which the two were working a ‘special’ mission, and had decided that sitting together would not help them spy on their target, as well as trail

Can I help it if these idiots find me attractive for looking so little and helpless? )

Who: Gabe & Omi
When: A Friday Night way back in 2004, during Omi's first ever RPG run, at NYMutants.
Where: Gabe's room at the Xavier Mansion
What: The first time for both.... in a way
Players: Renee= Gabe, Me = Omi
RPG: NY Mutants
Notes: Once upon a time, Omi my CAT Boy was part of his first ever RPG. It is the still up and running, or maybe not, NY Mutants, at Livejournal. I never thought that CAT Boy would make it into RPG, and even turn into a mutant. This particular log is about his first ever love encounter with a girl at the mansion. A girl. Omi had never had a girl in his life. Well, in this particular verse, Omi had never slept with a female. So.... This just holds true to the saying that goes, 'There's a First Time For Everything...' .... A first cute as hell time. heh.
Lesson To Be Learned: Make sure you use condoms when having sex kids! *nods* heh. Or something. Oh, and only have sex when you're sure you're ready for it.
Purpose: Happy EARLY Birthday Omi! <333

Omi had spent his whole morning with Blase. She had, actually, spent the night with him in his new room. He was now looking through the Livejournals, trying to see if Adriel had written anything, just anything that maybe would tell him what he might be thinking, but the bastard hadn't updated yet. Fucking lazy bum... Probably got wasted last night, with the stupid pretty Irish man. He thought this silently and then came across Gabe's diary. The girl had invited him to visit her. Hmmm. This should be cool, he thought. He looked over the bed. Blase was now taking an afternoon nap. She looked really peaceful. Omi shrugged and stood up. He headed for the door, intent on finding Gabe. If Blase would wake up, he'd just leave the door open for her, if she wanted to go back to her room. He stepped out quietly, and headed down the halls, intent on finding Gabe.

Though she had to admit, shy Omi was very sexy. )

Who: Callisto, Adriel, & Omi
When: Way back in early 2005, during Omi's second ever RPG run, at Mutants United.
Where: The Serpent Squad headquarters in America, more specifically New York City.
What: Callisto finally realizes she is over Adriel.
Players: Melodi as Callisto, and Myself as Adriel, & Omi.
RPG: Mutants United
Notes: Once upon a time, Omi my CAT Boy was part of his second ever RPG, Mutants United. Mutants United is no longer open, however? It was probably one of the best RPGs Omi has been part of. I never thought that CAT Boy would make it into RPG, and even turn into a mutant. This particular log is about Callisto and Adriel, but there is also a bit of Omi in there. Callisto has one last fight, and odd moment with Adriel, and along the way realizes that she’s over him.
Lesson To Be Learned: Everything happens for a reason.
Warning: Rated R for sexually sexual stuff and violence in here, so beware.
Purpose: Happy EARLY Birthday Omi! <333

He wasn't usually this angry... But he was remembering what happened with that Pete person. Omi hadn't been able to erase the man's memory of that little accident, so now he had to train even harder... Adriel jumped and kicked and shot his gun at the virtual opponents as each and every single one came at him without stopping. He was sweating profusely. The workout was always welcome. The rage, he disliked it, but it came more often nowadays... Maybe after this he'd go and spend time with Omi again. That always helped. The door of the training room was open. Adriel always had a bad habit of doing that, as he usually had people like Keni, or Pike joining him without warning. He wasn't expecting either of them, but they were unpredictable.

PLEASE. As if I don't know what happened to you and your street rats. )

When: Years 2004-2003
Where: AIM...
What: Random talks about Omi... This one is about how he was turning into a dreaded Mary Sue.
Players: None, this is an ooc chat....
RPG: NY Mutants
Notes: These are random chats about Omi and or Mock RPs with Omi. He's been around forever now. Just illustrating that. This particular chat is about how Omi was turning out to be a Mary Sue... heh.
Purpose: Happy EARLY Birthday Omi! <333

CATBoyisMine27: I'm beginning to feel bad... I'm doubting if Omi has a well rounded personality.. ;_; ....

As we speak, I'm holding my dearest Nintendo console in my lap to comfort me through this aggravating experience.

WE DO NOT FLAME IN THIS COMMUNITY. EVERYONE (you know who you are) that has taken part in the most recent drama (you know what I'm talking about) should be damn ashamed.

I'll say it again.

WE. DO. NOT. FLAME. IN. THIS. COMMUNITY.

EVER.

I've read the post and I CAN see how it's slightly off topic. The post pairs an off-topic item with an on-topic one. I can see how it may be frustrating. HOWEVER, WE DO NOT FLAME IN THIS COMMUNITY.

I'm really disappointed by the actions of some of the members here. You ARE entitled to speak up and voice your opinion, but do you really have to be disrespectful and outright mean in the process? I mean, seriously? Name calling? Swearing? You're making everything a billion times worse.

I'm not housing a community for babies. Stop acting like it. It's not the elementary school playground. Be nice or get out. Being nice doesn't mean you have to agree, but it does mean you have to retract your claws and stop acting like your opinion is the only one that matters.

The post and all it's comments have been REMOVED. Do not bring it up again, not even on this post. I want us all to get along but what you've done has effectively alienated someone in our community and made her feel as if she's going against a vast majority of people. DO NOT do that. I want people to feel welcome here. It's supposed to be a comfortable, relaxed environment where we can talk about gaming.

We're moving forward now. Don't bring it up again, as it's done. I hope everyone can heal and get over it.

I'll say it one more time, just because I really want to get this across -

WE DO NOT FLAME IN THIS COMMUNITY.

Thank you.

Gametrailers.com's Bonus Round posted the first part of a new episode on games and storytelling last week. The newest part was posted today, and it's even better than the first. It features a great panel that includes Dr. Greg Zeschuk from BioWare, David Jaffe from Eat Sleep Play, and N'Gai Croal from Hit Detection ('used to write for Newsweek).

It's been pretty well promoted on the Gametrailers.com front page, but I wanted to give it an extra plug here since I've really been enjoying it:

+1'ing summoner relic?!

  • Mar. 14th, 2010 at 6:16 PM
Ok. My current dynamis shell does CoP dyn enough that I thought I'd ask this, especially since I passed on -1 AF legs for my smn last time since I hadn't done my homework on this...(They might drop AGAIN)

Is any of the +1 relic worth it for summoner? REALLY worth it? I need to know since I'm 6/6, and if I +1 any of them, I'm gonna be sorta stuck since according to the rules, I can't lot it again for storage UNLESS it is a rot drop. (AKA. It's gonna hit the floor anyway, and I'd have to check first)

It does not seem that +1'ing my WHM relic is worth it(Not enough better to be worth the ancient currency, imo) but I was wondering about summoner...

360 Question

  • Mar. 14th, 2010 at 6:05 PM
Hey everyone. I have a quick question about the XBOX 360 and red-ringing.

Lately, my boyfriend's 360 has been freezing quite a bit. The only way to get it to respond is to press the power button and restart everything (which can blow sometimes if a lot has been done and not saved). I checked online about red-ringing, and the sites that I found mentioned freezing but also mentioned about four other signs that the console is about to red-ring, none of which he's seen in his XBOX.

The console is less than a year old (it'll be a year this summer) and started freezing about a month ago. Is this a sign that the XBOX will eventually red-ring, or is it just an annoyance? If it IS going to red-ring, does anyone know how long until it will? He got some sort of insurance policy with GameStop where they'll fix it for free if it red-rings within the first year, but that's over with on June 26th so it's kind of like well... If you're going to red-ring, XBOX, just do it so he can get it fixed rather than continuing to annoy us and freezing up all the time... (he's got some sort of Microsoft 3 year guarantee, too, but it's just easier to drop it off at this local GameStop and not have to deal with waiting and mailing).

Thanks for any helpful info!

Toss vs. Storage

  • Mar. 14th, 2010 at 4:26 PM
So I've finally hit that point in my FFXI career where I've managed to collect enough Ancient Beastcoins and matching Artifact Items from Limbus to upgrade a good portion of my AF that needs upgrading. I've upgraded my BRD hands and legs, RDM hat and body, WHM body and soon to be WHM hands. But since I've started working on SCH, SMN, and BLM lately, I've come to realize that well... my inventory room is in quite a bind. I'd like to not store and remove things that I need on a weekly basis and regularly, such as my THF AF (feet), and such. Which leaves me to ponder... is it worth the gil, time, and effort to request the upgraded pieces to store the set, or should I really just toss it out and call it good? I mean, I can't fathom EVER needing to wear my BRD AF hat or feet... I mean, lord help me if I do or something.

What do you guys think? {/toss} or request to store? I'm kind of leaning towards toss, myself personally. Also, what about AF weapons? I know the SAM weapon is used later or something, so I shouldn't toss it unless I want to pay later, but... ugh. Really?

Fallout 3

  • Mar. 14th, 2010 at 1:02 PM
I have a confession to make.

I'm a Fallout virgin. I've never played any of the games, and I've never had any real desire to do so. The main reason for this is because I played other Bethesda games like Morrowind and Oblivion and I really disliked them. The Fallout series just looked like more of the same to me.

Recently, I discovered the Fallout 3 GOTY Edition rotting away on my shelf. It turns out my boyfriend bought it months ago, but I guess he forgot about it because it's just sitting there collecting dust. I thought it would be a waste to just trade it back in, so I did a little research on the game. After reading all the glowing reviews, watching some videos and reading articles about the game, it's starting to seem very interesting to me.

What I want to know is, is it similar to Oblivion? Is the game accessible to newbies like me? If anyone has any tips or tricks for me, that would be quite helpful as well.

Thanks! :]

Xbox 360 play and charge kit problem...

  • Mar. 14th, 2010 at 12:25 AM
I've never used one before but what I did was snapped in the battery pack and plugged in the cable to the USB port and turned my console off for the night. I noticed the fans run while it's plugged in. The next morning I tried the controller but it had no charge. :(

Is my cable faulty or am I doing something wrong?
I double checked and the battery pack is snapped in securely.
I appreciate any help thanks~

Edit: Currently the light on it is green. Console on or off.
Controller is still dead unplugged.
Sometimes it's turns orange for just a moment when unplugging/replugging.
